After the Second World War, Peugeot's factories were largely destroyed; they had to start from scratch. However, the brand managed to recover its old machinery from Germany and relaunch production of the pre-war 202. But by May 1947, it was clear that a new model would soon emerge; this was confirmed in October at the Paris Motor Show. The Peugeot 203 was officially presented by the manufacturer, and over the years, it would be available in several body styles, ranging from the sedan to the commercial van, as well as the pickup truck, the convertible, and the cabriolet. In terms of Peugeot's style, the 203 was clearly inspired by American vehicles, such as the Ford Coupe Deluxe, the luxurious Lincoln Zephyr, and the Chevrolet Fleetline... styles revisited with a French touch by the oldest existing car brand in the world. Regarding performance, given that the economic conditions of the 1950s differed between France and the United States, the available engines could not compete with American V8s in terms of power. The goal was to produce and, above all, sell a vehicle that was reliable, accessible, and economical to operate while ensuring the company's profitability. Designed as early as 1946, the 203 was launched in 1948. With no real competition, this mid-range car became the quintessential "family" vehicle—more spacious and brighter than the Citroën Traction—and proved to be reliable, thereby cementing the brand's reputation.
